چکیده

In the present investigation, we compared the impact of illness on quality of life (QOL) in adult outpatients with unipolar (N = 89) and bipolar (N = 25) depression. While attending a university hospital in southern Brazil, patients completed the WHO's QOL Instrument-Short Version and the Beck Depression Inventory. After analyses, patients with bipolar depression reported significantly lower scores on the psychological QOL domain (p = .013) than patients with unipolar depression. There were no significant differences between the study groups in terms of social and demographic variables, in the other QOL domains assessed (i.e., physical health, social relationships, and environmental), and in the severity of depressive symptoms. In conclusion, our findings suggest that patients with bipolar and unipolar depressions have different QOL profiles, and that this difference is probably independent of the severity of the mood disturbance and might be related to the higher rates of suicide observed in the bipolar population.

Socio Demographic Variables in Unipolar and Bipolar Illness

T h e proposal to divide manic depressive illness into separate bipolar (alternating mania and depression) and unipolar (recurrent depression or recurrent mania) psychoses was first brought-forward by Leonhard (1959), but it was Angst (1966) who first produced convincing evidence in support of the divison. Perris (1968) was able to show that bipolar illness started on average of fifteen years e...

Differences in demographic composition and in work, social, and functional limitations among the populations with unipolar depression and bipolar disorder: results from a nationally representative sample

Yet, few studies have directly compared the populations with unipolar depressive and bipolar disorders, whether in terms of demographic characteristics or ...

Longitudinal course of symptom severity and fluctuation in patients with treatment-resistant unipolar and bipolar depression.

Little is currently known about the long-term course of symptom severity and fluctuation in patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). We assessed this using the longitudinal interval follow-up evaluation in 115 patients with TRD (84 unipolar, 31 bipolar) with 1-7 years (median 36 months) of follow-up. Of the follow-up months, 39.2% were spent asymptomatic and 21.1% at sub-threshold sy...
